About BTY
BathTubYoga is a blog. And a videoblog. Get it? Mark and Henry have just moved from London to New York City, where they are trying to live the dream as professional bloggers. BathTubYoga is their blog -- it's about social life on the Internet and the new technology that's become a part of our lives. Read what Mark and Henry have to say, every day, and then watch eps about them a few times a week.

A little bit about me: One year ago I was sitting in a posh office in downtown London, about to start my life in the business world. And then catastrophe struck: I downloaded an MP3 onto my computer at work. Harmless, don't you think? Two days later I found myself fired, fined, and jailed. Collateral damage of the digital age.
So here I am, living to New York City with my childhood friend Henry, making a go of it in the blogosphere. Enjoy the posts, and feel free to drop me a line!

A little bit about me: Hello, Internet! It's me, Henry Scott. You've probably heard of me. If not, here's a primer. I've been a stand-up comedian in London for the past few years, before I realized my true calling: blogging. I didn't like the comedy world much anyway. Too many agents. I hate agents. In November 2005 me and my best buddy Mark packed up for New York City, and here we are, proud parents of BathTubYoga. What else? I like Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng, and women love me.

MARK
It's the middle of bloody winter, why are we out here in t-shirts?
HENRY
We're late for our volleyball game. Look, when we get there, we have to ready to go straight on the court.
MARK
Can you take that ridiculous thing out of your head?
HENRY
No!
MARK
Do you really need that?
HENRY
Look, if I get a call, I have to be ready.
MARK
Yes, well, so will I, but with my telephone.
Mark pulls out his cellular phone.
HENRY
Who is going to call YOU?
Henry mimics Mark and laughs to himself. Just then a passer-by with an old fashioned telephone receiver ducktaped to his head walks past Mark and Henry, who stop in their tracks to observe the blatent and bizzare violation of cell phone etiquette. The man is shouting instructions to his secretary: "Susan, call NeoCorp. Tell them the memo is on the way. Cancel my three o'clock. Set up the flight to Lisbon, and please, make sure it's a vegetarian dinner this time!"
Henry grows irritable and rips the earpiece out of his head.
Mark grins with satisfaction.
The two blokes walk on.

With all due respect, I think you've missed some of the underlying subtlety here. More than a simpleminded sight gag, the phone duct-taped to his head is a metaphor for the way in which our lives are increasingly "bound" by technology. It invades our most personal spaces, even walks down the street. For this businessman it has become literally inescapable: one suspects that it will take a long time to get that duct tape out of his hair, and for all practical purposes he is "stuck" with it. Funny? Yes. But is it not also a little disquieting?

I agree. I also feel that this episode highlights the growing invasiveness of modern technology. In light of this episode it would remiss of me not to ask whether the phone is stuck to him or he to the phone?
Perhaps the whole notion of Bloggers serves to highlight the .com generation's growing addiction to computers and the internet.

of course it does, brigadier. bloggers are an extreme illustration of a society that breathes computers; human society (in industrialized nations) quite literally depends on them for countless absolutely necessary tasks. i think we're past the point of that revelation being groundbreaking. it's a little hackneyed, actually.
